Scouting Opportunities in Montgomery County
Montco Trail Challenge
The Montco Trail Challenge began in 2016 as a partnership between the Montgomery County Health Department, Planning Commission and Parks, Trails and Historic Sites as a family-friendly way to encourage physical activity and decrease the risk of heart disease and related heart health issues such as Type 2 diabetes and obesity. It also connected residents with County parks, trails and historic sites, offering new ways to increase physical activities levels in a free, natural environment.
The Challenge was very successful with 10 trails and 1500 people participating. Participants represented 5 Counties, various municipalities, diverse age groups and number of people per group. Ages ranged from 6 months to 73 years old with individuals, families and youth groups participating. There was even a dog or two participating!
For 2017, improvements to the Trail Challenge have been made. This year, the Trail Challenge has been expanded to include 13 trails with 2 “free spaces” you can fill in by visiting your favorite park, trail or historic park in or out of Montgomery County. Additionally, the timeframe of the Trail Challenge also changed. It is now 7 months long (May 6 through December 3) so you can experience the beauty and serenity of the trails through many seasons.
So what exactly is the Trail Challenge? The Trail Challenge is like a scavenger hunt. As you visit the trails, you look for a unique symbol at kiosks and trailheads. Each of the 13 trails has a different symbol. Keep track of the symbols on the Trail Challenge card which you can download from the website or pick up at your area library, at designated trails and parks and select YMCAs and recreation centers. You do not need to hike, walk, run or bike the entire trail, but need to be on it long enough to find the symbol.
Once you submit the correct symbols for 5 trails, you are an Explorer and will receive a patch. Submit 10 trails and you are an Adventurer and will receive a medal. If you complete all 15 trails, you are a Trailblazer and will receive a cooler backpack.
So if you are interested in a new, exciting way to Get Out and Go, check out the Trail Challenge website at www.montcopa.org/trailchallenge to register, print out your card and get some tips on getting started and safety. When you are on the trails, take some pictures and post them to Twitter or Facebook using #MontcoTrailChallenge!
See you on the trails!
